Cutting a heavy trunk into rounds for removal

Dead & Dangerous Tree Removal Brisbane

A dead tree does not stay standing indefinitely. It comes down in its own time, in its own direction, and usually in the first serious wind after you first noticed it. We remove dead and hazardous trees across Brisbane before that happens.

If you are not sure whether a tree is actually dead or just stressed, that is worth a look before anything is booked. Plenty of trees that look finished in August are back in leaf by November.

Removing a tree that is already failing

A compromised tree is harder to take down than a healthy one, not easier. The timber is brittle, limbs let go without warning, and you cannot rely on a hinge holding when the trunk is hollow. We assess the tree before anyone climbs it, and where the structure is not sound enough to climb we work from a lift or a crane instead.

Trees we are usually called for:

What to look for

Signs a tree has become a hazard

None of these are a diagnosis on their own. Two or three together usually mean it is worth having someone look properly.

  • Bark falling away in sheets

Loose or missing bark over a large area of trunk generally means the tissue underneath has already died.

  • A lean that has changed

Trees lean naturally. A lean that is new, or soil lifting and cracking on the opposite side of the trunk, is a different matter entirely.

  • Fungal brackets at the base

Mushrooms and shelf fungi on the trunk or root plate are a sign of decay inside the wood, where you cannot see it.

  • Deadwood raining down

Sticks and limbs appearing on the lawn after every bit of wind means the crown is shedding, and the pieces only get bigger.

  • No leaf at all in spring

A tree that stays bare while everything around it flushes is the clearest signal there is.

  • A hollow that sounds empty

Hollows are not automatically fatal — plenty of healthy trees have them — but a large cavity low on the trunk changes how the tree will fail.

Not sure how bad it is?

Send us a photo and we will tell you straight.

If it can be saved, we will say so.

Why a dead tree is not a cheaper job

People often assume a dead tree is simpler because there is nothing in leaf. The opposite is true. Sound timber behaves predictably under a saw; decayed timber does not, and a climber cannot trust anchor points in a trunk that has been rotting for two years. That is why these jobs are quoted on structure rather than size, and why they sometimes need a lift or a crane that a living tree of the same height would not. Our arborists are AQF5 Diploma certified and we carry public liability and WorkCover on every job.

Questions

Dead & Dangerous Tree Removal — Frequently Asked Questions

  • Usually the rules are more forgiving for a dead or genuinely hazardous tree, but the detail varies by council and most still want evidence. Brisbane City Council, for instance, does not require a permit where the tree is dead or poses an immediate hazard, but you must provide photographic evidence and in some cases an arborist report within 10 business days. Our council pages set out what each one asks for.

  • Often, yes, from the trunk, the bark and the buds. Brisbane trees drop a lot of leaf in a dry spell and recover fine. Where it genuinely is not obvious, that is what a proper assessment is for rather than a guess over the phone.

  • That depends entirely on what is underneath it. A dead tree in the middle of a paddock can wait. The same tree over a bedroom or a driveway cannot, and we will say so when we quote.

  • Sometimes, particularly after a tree has already caused damage. We can provide written assessments to go with a claim.
