Bamboo Removal Brisbane

Bamboo is the one job where cutting it down achieves almost nothing. Running bamboo spreads underground, and unless the rhizomes come out it will be back through the lawn, under the fence and into the neighbour’s yard within a season.

Removing it properly is an excavation job as much as a cutting one, which is why so many people are on their second or third attempt by the time they call us.

Why bamboo keeps coming back

Clumping bamboo stays roughly where you put it. Running bamboo does not — it sends rhizomes several metres out from the visible clump, under paths, under fences and under slabs, and every one of those can throw a new shoot. Cut the canes and you have removed the part that was not the problem. The removal has to follow the rhizome system out to its edges, which is why access and what the bamboo has grown under decides most of the job.

What removal involves:

A heavy limb down across a residential roofline

What makes it harder

What decides how big the job is

Four things, and none of them is how tall the bamboo has got.

  • Running or clumping

Clumping species stay contained and come out relatively cleanly. Running species are the ones that turn into an excavation.

  • What it has grown under

Rhizomes under a slab, a driveway or a retaining wall cannot simply be dug out, and that changes the approach entirely.

  • Whether it crosses a boundary

Bamboo that has run under a fence is a conversation with the neighbour before it is a job, because half the rhizome system is on their side.

  • How long it has been there

    A two-year-old clump is a morning. A twenty-year-old stand along a back fence is a different proposition.

Why the cheap option costs more

Almost everyone tries cutting it first, because it is free and it looks like progress. It comes back thicker. Then it gets poisoned, which kills the visible canes and leaves a rhizome mat that still needs excavating. By the time we are called, the job is usually bigger than it would have been at the start — and the bamboo has generally reached the neighbour. Doing it once properly is cheaper than doing it three times.

Questions

Bamboo Removal Brisbane — Frequently Asked Questions

  • We can, and it will come back. Cutting removes the canes and leaves the rhizome system, which is the part that spreads. If you want it gone rather than trimmed, the rhizomes have to come out.

  • A well-executed removal gets the great majority of it, but a rhizome fragment under a slab can still throw a shoot. We will tell you where the risk areas are, and follow-up on regrowth is usually a small job rather than a repeat of the whole thing.

  • That is common and it is worth a conversation with the neighbour first, because removing your side while the source remains means it will run back through. Where it becomes a dispute, an independent assessment is the usual way through.

  • Bamboo is generally not protected vegetation, but the rules are about the tree rather than the species, so it is worth a check where anything else is coming out at the same time.
