Tree Clearing for Contractors & Developers

On a development site, trees are either an obstacle or a condition of approval, and often both on the same block. We clear the ones that are coming out and protect the ones that have to stay.

Both parts matter. Damage to a retained tree during works is the sort of thing that surfaces at the worst possible moment in an approval.

Trees on and around a build

We take trees off a site at whatever scale the job needs — single obstructions, a whole frontage, or staged clearing as the works progress. Where a tree is being retained, we set the protection zone, specify what can and cannot happen inside it, and inspect during construction. The two halves are related: what gets removed changes the exposure and the wind loading on everything left standing.

Why it goes wrong

Where tree work delays a project

Almost never the cutting. Nearly always one of these.

  • The report came too late

Where an application needs an arborist assessment, commissioning it after lodgement adds weeks that were entirely avoidable.

  • A protected tree was not identified

Discovering mid-build that something on the site is protected is a considerably worse problem than knowing at the start.

  • A retained tree got damaged

Machinery over the root zone, fill against the trunk, a trench through the roots. The tree often survives the build and dies two years later, which is still your problem.

  • Access was not planned

Getting a crane in for a large removal is straightforward before the slab goes down and very difficult afterwards.

  • The street was not organised

Work over a road needs traffic control arranged in advance. It is routine, but it is not same-day.

The cheapest time to deal with a tree is early

Every tree problem on a development gets more expensive the later it is found. A protected tree identified at feasibility is a design constraint; the same tree found after the slab is poured is a redesign. A retained tree protected properly costs a temporary fence; the same tree damaged during works costs a replacement, a report and an awkward conversation with the assessing officer. We are fully insured for public liability and WorkCover, our arborists are AQF5 Diploma and Certificate 3 certified, and we would rather look at a site early than be called in to fix it late.

Questions

Contractors & Developers — Frequently Asked Questions

  • We remove trees at whatever scale the site needs, including staged clearing as works progress. Tell us what is on the block and what the approval says, and we will scope it. If part of the site needs something outside tree removal, we will say so rather than quoting work we are not the right people for.

  • Yes. Development applications frequently need a tree assessment covering what can be retained, what has to go and how the retained trees are protected. Getting it done before lodgement is the single easiest way to avoid delay.

  • Yes — setting the protection zone, specifying what is permitted inside it and inspecting during works. Root zone damage is the most common cause of trees dying after a build, and it is almost entirely preventable.

  • Yes, where work affects the road. It gets arranged in advance as part of the job rather than left with you.
