Arborists sizing up a felled trunk before sectioning it

Qualified Arborists, Fully Insured

Anyone can buy a chainsaw and advertise as a tree lopper. Very few of the operators quoting against us hold an arboriculture qualification, and fewer still carry the insurance that matters when something goes wrong on your property.

Here is exactly what we hold, so you can compare it against whatever else you have been quoted.

What we hold

Our arborists hold AQF5 Diploma and Certificate 3 qualifications in arboriculture, we carry public liability, WorkCover and professional indemnity insurance on every job, and we are listed on the Queensland Arboricultural Association’s Register of Approved Contractors and Consultants. We work to AS4373 Pruning of Amenity Trees, which is the Australian Standard governing how trees should be cut.

Worth asking any quoting contractor:

The crew gathered at the wood chipper between cuts

Why it matters

What an uninsured operator actually costs you

The cheap quote stops being cheap the moment anything goes wrong, and the exposure does not sit with the contractor.

  • Damage to your property

A limb through a roof is a large bill. Without public liability behind the operator, recovering it becomes your problem.

  • Damage to your neighbour’s property

Worse, because you engaged the contractor. Trees do not respect boundaries and neither does the liability.

  • Injury on your property

WorkCover covers the crew. Where a contractor carries none and someone is hurt on your block, the question of who is responsible gets unpleasant quickly.

  • A report that gets rejected

Where a council names a qualification level for an arborist report, a document from someone without it is not a saving. It is a rejected application. Professional indemnity is the cover that sits behind written advice, and it is the one an operator who only cuts trees is least likely to hold.

The Australian Standard is not optional for us

AS4373 sets out how amenity trees should be pruned. Topping is not in it, which is why we will not cut a tree off at gutter height however often we are asked. Working to the standard also means the cuts we make are ones the tree can seal, so the work does not need repeating in two years. It is the difference between a tree that is managed and one that is slowly being destroyed.

Questions

Qualifications & Insurance — Frequently Asked Questions

  • AQF Level 5 is a Diploma-level qualification in arboriculture. It is the level councils most commonly name when they specify who may prepare a tree assessment, and it is a considerable step beyond the Certificate 3 that qualifies someone to do the practical work.

  • Yes — ask and we will send it. Commercial clients and body corporates usually get it as a matter of course before we start.

  • The Queensland Arboricultural Association keeps a Register of Approved Contractors and Consultants. We are on it, and it is a useful way to check any Queensland tree contractor independently of what their website says.

  • Public liability is what responds to property damage caused by our work. It is exactly the cover a cheaper unqualified operator is most likely not to carry, and the reason the cheapest quote is sometimes the most expensive one.

  • It answers for the advice rather than the work. An arborist report, a risk assessment or a recommendation is a professional opinion, and professional indemnity is the cover that stands behind it. Public liability responds if we damage something; professional indemnity responds if the advice itself is the problem. It matters most on reports and assessments, which is why we carry it.
