Logan City Council Tree Removal Laws and Regulations

Logan City Council Tree Removal Laws and Regulations

Logan City Council has strict rules for tree removal, especially if the tree is located in a protected biodiversity zone. There are three main zones to be aware of:

  • Biodiversity corridors
  • Koala corridors
  • Environmental management and conservation areas

If your tree is outside these zones, you are generally allowed to remove it without needing a permit. However, some exemptions allow tree removal within these protected areas for fire hazard reduction or the control of problem species. These are detailed below.

Exemptions for Tree Removal:

    • Environmental management and conservation zones
    • Rural zones
    • Rural residential zones
    • Acreage precincts in low-density residential zones
    • Emerging community zones
    • Koala corridors as identified on biodiversity overlay maps
  2. Clearing for Development or Access Trees can be removed for approved development projects, including:
    • Within a development envelope area
    • For maintaining utility service corridors (up to 2m in width)
    • For creating access ways to dwellings (up to 5m in width)
  3. Clearing for Fire Hazard Reduction Fire hazard reduction allows for the removal of vegetation in certain zones near buildings:
    • Native vegetation can be cleared within 5m of a building or structure.
    • An additional 5m zone for the removal of vegetation (excluding native trees) around this area.
    • For sloping sites, extra vegetation may be cleared beyond the 5m zone based on the slope of the land.

How to Apply for a Tree Removal Permit

If your tree does not meet any of the exemption criteria, you will need to apply for a permit through a development application. It’s recommended to contact the Environmental Assessment Team at Logan City Council before submitting your application to ensure you haven’t overlooked any potential exemptions.
